Keeping Our Center ~ Day 81

I have a few very distinct memories of my children when they were young that are etched on my heart. One happened when my daughter, Bryn, was five and we were at her older brother’s basketball game. I had brought some paper, coloring books, markers and crayons with us to keep her busy. A few minutes after she started coloring, I felt a soft touch on my shoulder. It was a little African American girl who was sitting on her daddy’s lap. She didn’t need to say anything. All she had to do was look at me with her beautiful brown eyes. I turned to Bryn and whispered in her ear, “How would you like to share your paper and crayons with the little girl behind us?” She glanced around me, then looked at me with a little smile and a nod.

About twenty minutes later, another African American father and four kids sat down next to us. The little girl, who was about Bryn’s age, and her younger brother, just kept watching the girls coloring. Before long Bryn asked me to invite them to come color, too. Soon all four were on the floor coloring and all were well behaved, happy and kind to one another. I was afraid that Bryn wouldn’t want to share her new markers with anyone, but she didn’t mind sharing everything she had.

For a few brief shining moments, there was a vision of what this world could be right before my eyes. It was the Kin-dom of God right there on the floor of a basketball court. It was how Jesus lived and called us to live - with peace, love, kindness, acceptance, generosity and joy. I ache for this vision to be a reality.

Love & Light,

Kaye
