Wednesday of Holy Week

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34)

Honestly, I so love Jesus for this moment. He had been through a week of hell – rejection, betrayal, beatings, humiliation, and the incomprehensible pain of crucifixion. No wonder he cries out. To dedicate one’s life to sharing the love of God in compassion and justice, and to come to that kind of end would make anyone wonder if they’d got it wrong, or God had forsaken them. In any case, it is in this moment that Jesus becomes most like each of us.

You know, this line is actually a quote from Psalm 22:1, written by David who cried out from his own place of despair. We’ve all been there. We’ve felt so bereft, empty, lost, alone, humiliated, scared, devastated, broken, and confused, that we felt surely God must have turned heel and walked out the door.

Yet, I believe in my heart of hearts that the Divine never forsakes us. It just feels like it when our pain overwhelms us. But if God is the Very Essence of Love, and if the spark of the Divine is in ALL things, then it is impossible , by definition, for us to ever truly be separate from God, no matter how much it feels that way. Even in the times of our greatest suffering, I trust that the Spirit is working within us, and around us, to help us get through. Or, if getting through isn’t possible, then I believe we are held gently while we make the transition to whatever adventure awaits us after this life.

Love & Light,

Kaye
