Thursday of Holy Week

“I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)

As the story goes, just before Jesus took his last breath on the cross, he proclaimed that he was thirsty, so someone soaked a sponge with sour wine and touched it to his mouth. Well, sour wine isn’t exactly dregs, but (work with me here) it still reminds me of our saying about “drinking life to the dregs,” in other words, living life to its fullest, including all of the highest highs and lowest lows. If anyone had dregs in their cup, it was Jesus.

Have you ever slammed back that last slug of coffee or wine only to find yourself unexpectedly with a mouth full of gritty stuff? Just thinking about it sort of makes me want to gag! Seems like it would be safer putting the glass down before getting anywhere close to the bottom just to avoid the possibility.

There was only one point we know of where Jesus wanted to give up and put the cup down. In the Garden of Gethsemane we’re told he prayed “let this cup pass me by,” but there was no going back by that time. He’d marched on Jerusalem (sort of reminds me of marching on Washington), pissed off the Roman and Jewish authorities, and the powers-that-be were already tipped off to his location and were on their way to arrest him. However, at any earlier point he could have refused to drink. He could have put the proverbial cup down and walked away. He could have quietly stopped preaching and teaching, and lived out the rest of his life as a carpenter. But then he wouldn’t have been true to himself or to God.

It takes courage and strength to take all that life sends us when we live our truth, when we stand up for what we believe in, love unconditionally, and drink to the dregs.

Love & Light,

Kaye
