Keeping Our Center ~ Day 91

A few years ago I was leading a women’s retreat, at the end of which I asked for feedback and constructive criticism so as to make future retreats better. I wrote down all the comments and as I was reading through them recently, one really struck me. Now, I’ve changed the name to protect the identity of the person, but my note said Jane wants a bigger chair.

Really? A whole weekend of deep conversation, meditation, art, time away at a great retreat center, amazing women, and all I get is “I want a bigger chair”? Which, of course I have no control of any way. Sigh.

Does everything in life come down to how comfortable we are? We don’t try new things because we’d be uncomfortable. We don’t want to have the important, but difficult, conversations because we’d be uncomfortable. We don’t want to do something alone, even though it is really important to us, because we’d be uncomfortable. We don’t want to wear a mask, even though it is essential for our heath and others, because we’d be uncomfortable. We don’t want to face our own baggage, dark sides, judgementalism and prejudices because it would be uncomfortable. Honestly, I could go on and on, you know I could.

But what kind of life are you living if you’re comfortable all the time? I’m going out on a limb here, but I think it would be a very boring, mundane, lifeless life.

Being uncomfortable is not always great (like in the dentist’s chair), but in a physically pain-free way being uncomfortable can be exciting because it means we’re learning and growing. So, let go of some of the whininess about being uncomfortable, suck it up and engage the amazing life you were given!

Love & Light!
