Keeping Our Center ~ Day 86

One of the hardest pieces of advice in Scripture comes from Matthew 6:34, “Enough of worrying about tomorrow! Let tomorrow take care of itself. Today has troubles enough of its own.” Every time I’ve ever mentioned this passage, every control freak in the room goes ballistic. But, that’s ridiculous, we have to plan! We need to schedule appointments, make a list for the grocery store, get ready for a birthday party (or wedding, or whatever) and book plane tickets and a hotel for a trip. We can’t just do everything on the spur of the moment!

So, let’s be clear. Planning and worrying are different. Scheduling and succumbing to the black hole of anxiety are different. Thinking ahead and living constantly in the future are different. Get it?

You already know that Julie and I usually take two 2-mile walks a day with the dog. Lately, my feet have been walking while my mind has been taking its own frenzied walk down worry lane. I’m frankly a little annoyed with myself. That time used to be spiritual sustenance, a chance to take a deep breath and enjoy some fresh air, maybe even hold my honey’s hand and have a nice chat. But no… my brain hardly even accompanies us on these walks these days. I can take our entire 40 minute walk and have missed the whole thing because I was worried about something that I could do nothing about at the moment. Despite the seemingly popular belief that worrying works because most of those things we worry about never happen, worrying about tomorrow ad nauseam steals today.

I vow to change my errant ways, and I hope you’ll join me. We can schedule what we need to, and plan what we need to, deal with the problems of today as they arise, and there is still plenty of time left to live in the moment. And, no matter what the state of the world, or life, there are actually still plenty of beautiful moments to live.

Love & Light!
