Keeping Our Center ~ Day 68

In 2001, I met Mike S. at a “Preach-in” in Naramata, Canada, where I spent six days with fourteen other pastors of seven denominations from all over the US and Canada. Together we danced with the Scriptures and worked to create part of a preaching resource for pastors.

Mike was our leader who began our week by sharing his amazing story. When Mike was born he was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and wasn’t expected to live more than a few years. Those few years came and went and he was given another few years, and then another few, and another few. As a result, he lived with the constant thought that he would die sooner than later. His health deteriorated to the point of needing a double lung transplant. It was either that or death.

Oddly enough, this was a hard decision for Mike. He had lived with the idea of dying for so long that he was afraid to live. What would it mean to live? What would he do with his life? What if he came out of the surgery an invalid? Finally, he decided that he didn’t want to be defined by his fear of living. At the age of thirty he had a successful lung transplant.

I constantly hope and pray that all of you are being cautious and safe during this uncertain time. However, I also hope that none of us will become so paralyzed and anxious by the thought of this virus that we are afraid to live. Perhaps our living is defined a bit differently these days, but we are still alive. May we all find safe ways to enjoy relationships, nature, beauty, friendships, fun and spirituality.

Love & Light!
