Keeping Our Center ~ Day 60

Does my life have meaning? I imagine this is a question we’ve all wrestled with once or twice. It is a profoundly deep question. But I didn’t realize it was a flawed question until I read something that Parker Palmer wrote. Basically, he said that the question is inherently flawed because it is ego driven.

It is our ego, not our soul, that wants to make sure we’ve made an impact on the world, that we’ve succeeded, that we’ve been important, that we will be admired and remembered. But as soon as that becomes our motivation, we’ve lost the point of living a life of meaning.

I believe to truly live a life with meaning is to live true to one’s self and not count the number of people touched, or the number of dollars made, or the number of books sold, or whatever. It makes no difference whether you are a pastor, a doctor, a teacher, factory worker, or whatever. Meaning is an inside job, not an outside acquisition. Does this make sense?

As Parker Palmer says, “All I can control are my own intentions, and my willingness to give myself to them: may they always be to serve rather than show off… My best offerings come from a deeper, more intuitive place that I can only call my soul.”

All that is required to bring real meaning to our lives is to live from the heart, to give from our compassion, to be as true to the Divine Spark in us as we can be.

Love & Light!
