Keeping Our Center ~ Day 57

Brother David Steindl-Rast said, “In everything we experience, we can hear God singing, if we listen attentively.”

Stop for just a moment. Take a deep breath. Do you hear it? If I pause to intentionally listen for God’s singing, I feel the pulse of the universe, or perhaps that is my own heart beating… or perhaps they are one and the same. But it feels like all things pulse, hum, or vibrate with life, energy, love. I can sink myself into it only to be jarred back by my incessant thoughts and darn work ethic. Heaven forbid I sit still and simply be for a few minutes.

I listen for God’s singing in the whisper of the trees or the roar of the wind bringing in a storm.  The waves of the ocean carry the Divine voice, as does the gurgling of a stream. But God sings in more than just nature. We can hear the One song in laughter and love, in concern and caring, in grief and brokenness. It’s harder to identify in the rush of the traffic, or the beeping of monitors attached to a loved one. But if I think about it, God’s singing – presence, renewing, claiming, comforting, challenging, loving, opening, calming, holding, life-giving – must, by definition, be in all things. We just need to listen.

Where do you hear God’s singing this morning?

Love & Light!
