Keeping Our Center ~ Day 50

Yesterday, I wanted to lift up and honor the communities that give us a sense of belonging, hope and light. Today, let me expand on the concept of community a bit.

The larger reality, that has become strikingly obvious, is that we belong to the community of the world. What happens to people on one side of the globe does affect what happens to people on the other side. How people live their lives does affect our environment. If we doubted, or ignored, these things before, we can’t any longer (well, it seems some people can, but I don’t get that). I know this is preaching to the choir.

So, here’s a harder one to consistently wrap our heads around… the women in Menards last Tuesday who were loudly berating anyone wearing masks as buying into a government conspiracy, well, they are part of the community, too. The protesters in so many states who are brandishing their weapons and their “freedom” rhetoric, and, in their fear and ignorance, are being cavalier about the well-being of themselves and others, well, they are part of the community, too. Hmmm…

I know there are lots of people like this and that they can make it difficult for us to maintain a sense of benevolence for the human community. I know they push our buttons, annoy us, or just downright piss us off. I get it. Really Jesus? Love one another? You’ve got to be absolutely kidding me? Even them?

However, berating them, or getting angry doesn’t really ever help. The spiritual challenge is to continually work on understanding, staying positive, erring on the side of compassion, and being a light in the world as much as possible. Each kind, generous, gentle, respectful, loving thing we do or say makes a difference because we are all connected.

Love & Light!
