Keeping Our Center ~ Day 38

I find myself thinking a lot about all of the people who are dying alone, and the families who are unable to support or comfort their loved ones in person. I know that health care workers and chaplains are trying to help as best they can, but it just isn’t the same. To me this has to be the worst thing about COVID-19.

It reminds me of a young mother I knew many years ago who died of cancer leaving two young girls behind. One time when I was talking with her she told me that every time she went to give the girls a hug she wondered how many hugs she had left. It was heart-wrenching to think about, but, honestly, none of us knows how many hugs we have left, or how many more “I love yous” or “I’m proud of you” or “thank you” or chances to say “I’m sorry.” I’m really not trying to bum you out here, I’m trying to remind all of us to say the important things we need to say, and to say them often. It won’t hurt us.
