Keeping Our Center ~ Day 37

Years ago I read Jan Karon’s wholesome novels about an Episcopal priest named Father Tim and the little town he served in. I honestly don’t remember too much about the books except a prayer that I learned. Each day when Father Tim went to the church to work he would utter a prayer at the door saying, “God make me a blessing to someone today.” I have said that prayer many, many, many times since reading that.

It reminds me that we should not seek so much to be blessed by God as to be a blessing to others. For me, this short prayer opens up a deliberate invitation for the Spirit to move in me. Despite being isolated during these times, I believe it is still very possible for us to be blessings to others. Follow your heart when it nudges you to make a phone call, write a note, send an email, drop off some flowers on someone’s doorstep, leave encouraging messages in chalk on your sidewalk, or post a positive meme on Facebook. Be creative! All these little things make a difference. 

I invite you to join me in making this prayer part of your morning routine. Say it when you sip your first cup of coffee, or when you are in the shower, or when you are waking up your computer for a day at your virtual office. Open yourself up to being God’s instrument (from a safe distance for now) in this world.
