Keeping Our Center ~ Day 35

A number of years ago I was teaching a class at church and trying to explain that doing something every day – like reading a devotional book, or meditating, or reading scripture, or journaling – just doesn’t come easy and naturally for me. I sighed and said, “I’m just not very good at… at…” and someone chimed in “discipline.” Yes! That’s exactly it! I have such a problem with discipline that I can’t even remember the word!  So, for those of you who don’t actually read these every day and end up catching up at some point, if at all, I completely understand.

I tend to balk at having to do something a certain way every day, though I’ve always admired those folks who enjoy ritual and discipline. My connections with God tend to be a bit more varied and random; however, they do happen every day.

What has evolved for me is the ability to recognize the many different ways that Spirit and I connect each day. It may be walking the dog, something I read in a book, the lyrics to song that pop into my head, the warm feeling of talking with a friend whose known me all my life, playing piano, watching the sunrise, feeling the warm spring breeze against my skin… it may be almost anything. These sorts of things happen for each of us every day. The “discipline” is the awareness to recognize the Holy One in the ordinary. Today, pay special attention the Divine in the mundane, in the everyday, and in the chaos, you’ll be amazed at where you find the Spirit.

Love & Light!
