Keeping Our Center ~ Day 33

So, here’s a tough one… what do we do when our faith fails? Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones and this has never happened to you. I happen to know that not everyone is as fortunate.

Faith never fails when life is good, when our blessings are numerous and obvious, and we feel like the world is full of glorious possibilities for our future. These are the times we’re either thanking the Divine for so much goodness, or we’ve sort of forgotten about God because, well, life is so good what did we need God for?

Faith fails when we get slapped upside the head by life and find things careening out of control. There is some crazy statistic like 98% of people who visit a church for the first time have had some kind of major life change or crisis within the last year. My gut says they are looking for a place that will shore up their bruised or damaged faith. Or maybe more specifically, they are looking for a God they can have faith in. You see, I have to wonder if our faith doesn’t fail because we set God up to fail by expecting too much. For example, if God doesn’t save someone from death, or restore a struggling relationship, or erase our grief, or fix someone’s mental illness, or keep us from losing our job, then maybe there really isn’t a God. Or at least not a God that cares. Do you see how this thought process goes?

Yes, my faith has wavered over the years, but as I’ve evolved in my understanding of God, my faith has grown stronger. God didn’t give my mother cancer when I was a teenager, God didn’t turn people against me, God didn’t create our puppy Rosie with underdeveloped kidneys, God didn’t give my daughter a heart condition, God didn’t send this pandemic, and God is not a genie that fixes everything that I want fixed the way I want it (or them) fixed.

For me (and as always, if this makes no sense to you, then ignore it), God is an energy of Love that, when tapped into, is enough to guide me through anything with grace and integrity. God is the Ground of My Being that strengthens, supports and nourishes me through life. God is the deepest Essence of my True Self, found under layers of baggage and ego. God is Light that helps me find the positive, the possibilities, and the hope in every situation. And God is Presence in the warmth of the sun, the freshness of the wind, and the kindness of others. In this I have faith.

Love & Light!
