Keeping Our Center ~ Day 19

Where is your happy place? Chances are most of us are naming a place far away. We’re dreaming of beaches, or mountains, or fishing, or the cabin (when there aren’t repairs to do), etc. Julie and I were lucky to have a week in our happy place before all this COVID stuff hit. For us it looks like a beach, with sunshine, the rolling of the ocean, and a cabana boy to bring us fruity drinks while we play scrabble.  Sigh.

Thomas Merton once said, “Here is the unspeakable secret: paradise is all around us as we do not understand it.” And, he’s right. While I love my happy place, the truth is that with an attitude adjustment, every place could be my happy place. Every place could be paradise.

When we return from a trip, most of us are usually overjoyed to be back in our own beds, with our familiar stuff around us. I know we’re probably all getting a little too much time with our own stuff in these Stay at Home days, but with a slightly different perspective, we get to spend time in the paradise that surrounds us.

Today let’s look with fresh eyes at the things in our lives that are so familiar that we take them for granted. Our homes, our yards, the flowers poking their heads out of the soil, the squirrels and rabbits, the sunshine… paradise is right here.
