Keeping Our Center ~ Day 16

Who am I? It must be the quintessential spiritual question. There is a meditation exercise that calls us to keep asking ourselves that question over and over again until we have gone deep enough to begin to understand the very core essence of ourselves. Ironically enough, that pure understanding begins when we have gone beyond words.

If someone asks us who we are, we tend to very quickly respond with a role we play: I am a mother, a wife, a pastor, a daughter. Or we respond with characteristics: I am creative, kind, calm (so people tell me), witty, intelligent. But is there more? What is our true self?

I ask the question today because it feels like we need reminding that we are much more than our physical bodies, the things that we do, and even the things we feel. We are more than people in search of toilet paper and anti-bacterial wipes. We are more than our fear of germs and getting sick. We are more than our frustration or boredom. We are more than our prayers and beliefs.

It is my belief (doesn’t have to be yours) that we have always been and shall always be, because we are one with the One. We cannot be lost, and we cannot cease to exist. I find comfort, strength and courage in this. Plus it allows me to step back and put life in a much broader perspective, and in that I find peace.

Love & Light!
