Keeping Our Center ~ Day 11

Good Morning!

Here’s something I don’t claim to have any absolute answers about (well, that’s true about a lot of things actually...), but I do have some thoughts about it at a time like this: prayer. As always, feel free to take or leave my ponderings.

How we understand prayer has to do with how we understand God. There are plenty of folks out there who equate God with some kind of genie in the sky just waiting to be asked to grant wishes. And if you ask tenaciously enough, and specifically enough, and you’ve been faithful enough, Great Genie God will grant your request. For me, the Divine is (and here is where words fail) more like a underlying river of love energy flowing through all things, always there, always available to be tapped into for strength, patience, direction, hope, courage, joy, compassion and healing (I mean this more on a spiritual level than a physical level).

Prayer then is a way to intentionally connect with God, to dip our toes in the river for a few moments. Then in our prayer of stillness, or conversation, or music, or simple awareness of beauty, a loving thought sent to someone else (however we choose to pray, there are many, many ways), we release our love and energy to mix with God’s creative energy, and the energy of all creation. Through that connection I can draw the spiritual support I need, and I trust that if I’m sending spiritual support to another, that the river is carrying it there.

If nothing else, I know that prayer changes me. It helps me to center, to be more calm, to remember that I am not alone, and to focus on what is important.

Today, I hold you all in the light... this is my prayer.
