Friday of Holy Week

“Abba, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46)

On this Day of Tears, while we dwell in the midst of death, these words are the way to life. With these words, we’re given assurance that as Jesus released his mortal body, his spirit was home once again in Ultimate Oneness.  I feel like committing our spirits to the Divine Essence is easier in death than it is in life. Sure, we all fight death with everything we have, but when it comes to the end, most people are ready to release the pain and struggle of this world and dwell fully once again in the embrace of the Spirit.

If we trust God at that point, why can’t we trust God a bit more during our lives? Any talk about surrendering or letting go is taken as a nice concept, but unrealistic. It pretty much goes against everything we’ve been taught. We want control over our lives… or at least the illusion of control! We’d never admit it, but I think most of us believe that we can do a better job with our lives than God can.

I think people fear that if they “surrender” to the Divine they’ll end up as missionaries in Timbuktu, eating locust and using outhouses! For me, surrender looks more like getting on a blow up chair (with a drink holder, mind you) and floating down the river instead of walking upstream against the current. Surrender means listening for the still, small voice to point me in the right direction. Surrender means doing the best I can and then trusting the Spirit to take it from there. Surrender means not always having to have all the answers, or to have certainty in my life, but to trust the journey. Surrender means letting go of my ego and embracing compassion and love. Surrender means opening the door and letting the Divine come in and rearrange the furniture, and being surprised by how much I like the change! I could go on, but hopefully you get the drift. I’m not always good at it, but life is better when I am.

Jesus didn’t just commit his spirit in death, but every day of his life. How about this… just for today I commit my spirit to the Essence of All That Is, trusting that Love will lead me well.

Love & Light,

Kaye
